Energy Management System is a system in an organization or plant to achieve energy efficiency through well laid out procedures and methods. This system will provide a continual improvement which will spread the awareness on energy efficiency in the entire organization or plant. The online Energy Management System will link high level management energy performance KPIs to energy operating parameters for operational guidance.

The objective of the management system as described above is to ensure that activities take place on a daily basis to ensure that plant targets are continuously met. Too often in plants, actuals vs targets are only reported on a monthly basis, which means the event is already far too late for corrective measures to be taken i.e, inefficient operation has already taken place. Therefore the implementation of online energy Management System will continuously monitors the overall plant energy performance and relating any poor performance to deviations from target of operating parameters.

An Energy Management System is effective only when it is monitored and steered on a minute-to-minute basis rather than year-to-year basis. Like a ship which has to be steered on a minute to minute basis in order to reach its destination in a timely manner, any process plant will also need to be constantly steered to meet management targets for energy efficiency.

This EMS has been implemented successfully at Petronas Penapisan (Terengganu) Sdn Bhd, MTBE (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, PDH, Petronas Penapisan (Melaka) Sdn Bhd and Asian Bintulu Fertilizer Sdn Bhd and other interested petrochemical plants in Malaysia.
